Vulvoplasty (Episioplasty)
Aproximate Cost:
$1,100 - $1,400
What It Is
A vulvoplasty, also called an episioplasty, is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin folds around the vulva. These folds can trap moisture, urine, and debris, creating a warm environment for bacteria. The surgeon removes the extra skin and reshapes the surrounding tissue to allow better airflow and reduce irritation.
Why It’s Performed
This procedure is performed to treat a recessed vulva (also called hooded vulva), which commonly causes chronic skin infections, urinary tract infections, irritation, or discomfort. Correcting the anatomy reduces moisture accumulation, prevents recurrent infections, and improves overall comfort and hygiene.
Risks Involved
Possible complications include bleeding, infection, swelling, wound breakdown, or recurrence of skin infections if underlying causes such as obesity are not addressed. Most complications are minor and resolve with proper postoperative care.
Typical Recovery Time
Most dogs recover within 2–3 weeks. Activity should be restricted during this time to allow the surgical site to heal. A safety cone is used to prevent licking or chewing at the incision. Stitches are removed or dissolve on their own within about two weeks, and most dogs experience significant relief once healed as well as a significant decrease in UTI's.
