Mass Removal

Aproximate Cost:
$800 - $1,500

What It Is
Mass removal surgery involves surgically excising a lump or growth from the skin or underlying tissues. The surgeon makes an incision around the mass, removes it with a margin of normal tissue when appropriate, and closes the site in layers. The removed tissue is often submitted to a laboratory for biopsy to determine whether it is benign or malignant(cancer).

Why It’s Performed
This procedure is done to eliminate growths that are enlarging, causing discomfort, ulcerating, or suspected to be cancerous. Removing the mass prevents further irritation, infection, or trauma and allows for accurate diagnosis through histopathology. Early removal can improve cosmetic results and prevent health problems, especially for malignant tumors.

Risks Involved
Possible complications include bleeding, infection, swelling, wound breakdown, and recurrence if cancerous tissue extends beyond the surgical margins. Large masses or those in high-tension areas may require more complex closure techniques or skin flaps, which carry additional risk of delayed healing.

Typical Recovery Time
Most pets recover within 10–14 days. Activity is restricted during this period to protect the incision, and a safety cone is used to prevent licking or chewing. Stitches are removed or dissolve on their own within about two weeks. Most pets return to normal activity soon after.
