Mammary Chain Removal
Aproximate Cost:
$1,500 $2,100
What It Is
A mammary chain removal, or mastectomy, is the surgical removal of some or all mammary glands (breast tissue) on one or both sides of the abdomen. The surgeon removes the affected glands along with surrounding tissue and nearby lymph nodes if needed, then closes the site in layers to allow healing.
Why It’s Performed
This procedure is performed to treat or prevent the spread of mammary tumors. It is often recommended when tumors are malignant, large, recurrent, or when multiple glands are affected. Early surgical intervention offers the best chance for complete removal and reduces the risk of cancer spreading to other parts of the body.
Risks Involved
Potential complications include bleeding, infection, swelling, wound breakdown, and fluid buildup under the incision (seroma). Because the surgery involves a large incision, healing may take longer than with smaller procedures. There is also a risk of cancer recurrence or metastasis, especially with malignant tumors.
Typical Recovery Time
Recovery at home takes 2–4 weeks. Activity must be restricted during this period, and a safety cone is used to prevent licking or chewing at the incision. Stitches are removed or dissolve on their own within about two weeks. The other side can be performed 4-6 weeks after the first.
