Foreign Body or Obstruction
Aproximate Cost:
$1,400 - $2,500
What It Is
Foreign body or intestinal obstruction surgery is performed to relieve a blockage in the stomach or intestines. The obstruction may be caused by a swallowed object (such as a toy, fabric, or bone) or by other conditions such as intestinal twisting, telescoping of the intestines (intussusception), or masses. During surgery, the surgeon identifies and corrects the obstruction, which may involve removing foreign material, correcting an intussusception, removing a damaged section, or excising a mass to restore normal gastrointestinal function.
Why It’s Performed
This procedure is performed to restore the normal passage of food and fluids through the digestive tract. Obstructions can cause vomiting, abdominal pain, dehydration, and damage to the intestinal lining. If left untreated, they can lead to intestinal perforation, infection (peritonitis), sepsis, and death. Surgical correction is often life-saving.
Risks Involved
Potential complications include infection, leakage from the intestinal incision, scar tissue or narrowing of the intestine, and anesthetic risks. The risk of complications increases if the intestinal tissue is already compromised or if the obstruction has been present for an extended period, making early diagnosis and treatment critical.
Typical Recovery Time
Most pets remain hospitalized for 1–3 days for intravenous fluids, pain control, and close monitoring. After discharge, activity is restricted for approximately two weeks while the incision heals, and a safety cone is used to prevent licking or chewing at the surgical site. Most pets make a full recovery within 2–3 weeks.
