Aural (Ear) Hematoma
Aproximate Cost:
$800 - $1,000
What It Is
An aural hematoma is a collection of blood between the skin and cartilage of the ear flap (pinna). Surgery involves making an incision to drain the accumulated blood and clots, then placing sutures or a small drain to prevent the space from refilling. This allows the ear to heal flat and minimizes long-term deformity.
Why It’s Performed
This procedure is performed to relieve pain, swelling, and pressure in the ear caused by a hematoma. Hematomas usually develop after vigorous head shaking or scratching from underlying ear infections, allergies, or trauma. Treating the hematoma surgically speeds healing, reduces recurrence, and helps maintain the ear’s normal shape.
Risks Involved
Possible complications include infection, recurrence, bleeding, or thickening and scarring of the ear. Even with treatment, some cosmetic changes to the ear shape (cauliflower ear) can occur, though surgery greatly reduces this risk compared to letting it heal on its own.
Typical Recovery Time
Most pets recover within 2–3 weeks. Sutures or drains are usually removed after 2–3 weeks once the ear has flattened and healed. An safety cone is recommended during this time to prevent scratching or head shaking that could reopen the site.
