Cherry Eye - Single
Aproximate Cost:

What It Is
Cherry eye surgery is performed to correct a prolapsed third eyelid gland. This condition occurs when the tear gland located at the base of the third eyelid pops out of its normal position and becomes visible as a red, swollen mass in the corner of the eye. The procedure involves carefully repositioning and securing the gland back into its normal location to continue normal tear production.
Why It’s Performed
This surgery is done to protect long-term eye health and tear production. If left untreated, the exposed gland can become irritated, inflamed, or infected, and chronic exposure can lead to decreased tear production and painful dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). Surgical replacement preserves the gland’s function while resolving the cosmetic appearance of the prolapse. Common in brachycephalic, short nose, breeds.
Risks Involved
Possible complications include infection, swelling, corneal irritation, or recurrence of the prolapse, which may require a second procedure.
Typical Recovery Time
Most pets recover quickly, with swelling resolving in 1–2 weeks. A safety cone is used to prevent rubbing, and activity is restricted during the healing period. Eye medications are usually prescribed for 1–2 weeks to reduce inflammation and promote healing.
