Toe Amputation
Aproximate Cost:
$1,000 - $1,500
What It Is
Toe amputation (digit amputation) is the surgical removal of one or more toes at the level of the toe joint or more proximally depending on the disease or injury. The surgeon removes the affected portion of the paw, contours the remaining skin and soft tissues, and closes the incision to produce a comfortable, weight-bearing limb.
Why It’s Performed
Indications include irreparable trauma (crush injuries, severe fractures), non-healing or infected wounds, necrosis from frostbite or vascular compromise, and tumors (e.g., malignant digital squamous cell carcinoma or mast cell tumors). Amputation removes the source of pain or disease and often restores a pain-free, functional limb when salvage is not possible.
Risks Involved
Possible complications include infection, bleeding, wound dehiscence, seroma, or delayed healing. Depending on how many toes or how proximal the amputation is, pets may show temporary changes in gait; however most adapt well. Rarely, chronic irritation at the amputation site or phantom-type sensitivity can occur. Proper surgical technique and post-op care minimize these risks.
Typical Recovery Time
Pets go home the same day, expect incision check and suture removal at about 10–14 days. Short-term activity restriction (crate rest or leash walks only) for 10–14 days is recommended to protect the incision; gradual return to normal activity over 3–4 weeks is typical. Most patients are comfortable and fully functional within 3–6 weeks, depending on the extent of the amputation and any concurrent orthopedic issues.
