Tibial Tuberosity Avulsion
Aproximate Cost:
$1,500 - $2,000
What It Is
A tibial tuberosity avulsion occurs when the bony prominence on the front of the tibia (shin bone), where the patellar tendon attaches, is pulled away from the main shaft of the bone. This injury is most common in young, growing dogs after trauma. Surgical repair typically involves stabilizing the fragment with pins and somtimes a tension band wire to counteract the pull of the quadriceps muscles and allow the bone to heal in its normal position.
Why It’s Performed
The tibial tuberosity is essential for normal knee (stifle) function, as it anchors the patellar tendon. Without surgical stabilization, the knee cannot extend properly, leading to pain, lameness, and permanent loss of function. Repair restores the ability of the quadriceps muscle to move the leg and ensures the bone heals in correct alignment.
Risks Involved
Potential risks include infection, loosening or migration of pins or wires and delayed healing. Long-term complications such as arthritis or altered gait are uncommon if the injury is repaired promptly and the patient is properly restricted during recovery.
Typical Recovery Time
Most pets begin using the leg within a few days after surgery. Strict activity restriction is required for 6–8 weeks to allow full healing. Follow-up x-rays are taken to monitor progress, and implants may be removed once healing is complete if they cause irritation. Most young dogs return to normal, pain-free function with an excellent long-term outcome.
