SI Luxation Lag Screw
Aproximate Cost:
$1,500 - $2,500
What It Is
Sacroiliac luxation occurs when the pelvis separates from the sacrum (the lower part of the spine) at the sacroiliac joint, usually due to trauma such as being hit by a car. A lag screw repair is a surgical technique in which a screw is placed across the joint to compress and stabilize it, restoring alignment between the pelvis and spine.
Why It’s Performed
This surgery is indicated when the pelvis is displaced and unstable, preventing normal weight-bearing or causing significant pain. Stabilizing the SI joint allows the pelvis to heal correctly, helps preserve nerve and muscle function, and improves the chances of a return to normal mobility. Repair may also be combined with fixation of other pelvic fractures when present.
Risks Involved
Possible risks include infection, screw loosening or breakage, nerve injury near the surgical site, or incomplete stabilization if the bone is severely fragmented. As with any trauma surgery, other injuries (to the bladder, nerves, or soft tissues) may complicate healing.
Typical Recovery Time
Most pets require strict rest for 6–8 weeks following surgery. X-rays may be taken during follow-up visits to confirm proper screw placement and bone healing. With appropriate rest and care, many pets return to comfortable daily activity within 2–3 months, though severe trauma cases may need a longer recovery.
