Plate Removal
Aproximate Cost:
$1,000 - $1,800
What It Is
Plate removal is a follow-up orthopedic procedure to take out a bone plate and screws that were previously placed to stabilize a fracture. While most implants are left in place for life, plates may be removed if they cause irritation, interfere with surrounding tissues, or if complications develop.
Why It’s Performed
Most plates do not need to be removed once the fracture has healed. However, removal may be recommended if the plate becomes painful, loosens, or becomes infected. The goal is to restore long-term comfort and function once healing is complete.
Risks Involved
Possible risks include infection, bleeding, temporary pain, or difficulty retrieving implants if bone has grown around them. Rarely, removing a plate too early can weaken the bone and increase the risk of refracture, which is why removal is carefully timed based on x-rays and clinical healing.
Typical Recovery Time
Recovery from plate removal is generally quicker than the original fracture repair. Most pets go home the same day and require 1–2 weeks of activity restriction while the incision heals. In rare cases where bone strength is still developing, a longer restriction period may be advised. Most pets return to normal activity soon after suture removal.
