Pelvic Fracture
Aproximate Cost:
$2,500 - $3,500
What It Is
Pelvic fracture repair is a surgical procedure used to stabilize breaks in the bones of the pelvis. Depending on the type and location of the fracture, techniques tend to use plating to maintain pelvic "box" opening. Because the pelvis supports the spine and hind limbs, accurate reconstruction is important for long-term comfort and mobility.
Why It’s Performed
Pelvic fractures are most often caused by trauma, such as being struck by a car. While some minor pelvic fractures can heal with strict rest, many require surgical repair—especially if the pelvic box is collapsed which can result in fecal incontinance aside from mobility issue. Surgery restores stability, bladder and colon function, and helps pets return to normal activity more quickly.
Risks Involved
Risks include infection, implant loosening or breakage, delayed healing, or narrowing of the pelvic canal. Because the pelvis is close to important nerves, blood vessels, and the urinary tract, there is also risk of damage to these structures. Arthritis or long-term stiffness may occur if the hip joint itself is involved.
Typical Recovery Time
Most pets require 8–10 weeks of activity restriction to allow bone healing. Pain control, supportive care, and physical rehabilitation are key to a smooth recovery. X-rays are taken during follow-up visits to monitor healing progress. Many pets regain excellent function and mobility, although severe injuries may result in some long-term stiffness or gait changes.
