Limb Amputation
Aproximate Cost:
$1,200 - $2,100
What It Is
Limb amputation is the surgical removal of a pet’s leg, either a front or rear depending on the location of disease or injury. The procedure involves carefully dissecting and removing the affected limb while ensuring proper closure of muscles and skin to create a comfortable and functional outcome.
Why It’s Performed
Amputation is performed when saving the limb is not possible or would cause ongoing pain. Common reasons include severe trauma (such as fractures that cannot be repaired), bone or soft tissue tumors, severe infections, or congenital deformities. For many pets, amputation can provide a pain-free, mobile, and good quality of life when other treatments are not effective or feasible.
Risks Involved
As with any major surgery, risks include bleeding, infection, wound healing complications, and pain during the recovery period. Pets with pre-existing orthopedic disease in other limbs may take longer to adjust. While most animals adapt very well, large or overweight pets may require extra support during rehabilitation and throughout life.
Typical Recovery Time
Strict rest is required for the first 2 weeks, with incision healing in 10–14 days. Many pets adapt to moving on three legs within days, and most resume a normal, happy lifestyle within 4–6 weeks.
