Fracture - Humeral Condyle
Aproximate Cost:
$2,500 - $3,000
What It Is
A lateral humeral condyle fracture repair is an orthopedic procedure to stabilize a break at the lower end of the humerus (upper arm bone) where it forms part of the elbow joint. These fractures are common in young, growing dogs. Repair often involves placement of pins or screws to realign the bone fragments and secure them in place for healing.
Why It’s Performed
This surgery is performed to restore normal alignment and function of the elbow joint. Because the fracture crosses through a growth plate and into the joint, it is considered an emergency surgical condition and should be repaired within 3-5 days. Without prompt repair, pets may suffer from chronic pain, joint deformity, arthritis, or permanent lameness. Stabilization with internal implants allows the bone to heal in the correct position and helps preserve joint function.
Risks Involved
Potential risks include infection, implant loosening or migration, delayed or incomplete healing, and stiffness in the elbow. Because the fracture involves the joint surface, there is also a risk of developing arthritis even after successful repair, though surgery greatly reduces long-term complications and restores mobility.
Typical Recovery Time
Most pets require strict activity restriction for 6–8 weeks after surgery. X-rays are taken to monitor bone healing and to determine when activity can safely be increased. With appropriate rest and follow-up, most dogs regain strong function of the limb, though some may show mild stiffness or changes as they age.
