Tail Amputation
Aproximate Cost:
$800 - $1,200
What It Is
Tail amputation is the surgical removal of part or all of a pet’s tail. The procedure involves carefully dissecting through the tissues and bone at the chosen level of the tail, followed by closure of the skin to allow for proper healing.
Why It’s Performed
Tail amputation is performed when the tail becomes chronically injured, diseased, or poses a quality-of-life issue. Common reasons include repeated trauma (such as “happy tail” injuries where the tail repeatedly strikes hard surfaces), severe infections or abscesses that fail to heal, fractures that cannot be repaired, tumors or masses, and complications from other tissue damage. Removing the affected portion of the tail helps eliminate pain and prevents ongoing complications.
Risks Involved
Possible risks include infection, bleeding, wound breakdown, or delayed healing. Depending on the level of the amputation, there may also be a risk of ongoing sensitivity or irritation at the surgical site. Tail amputation is considered a safe and effective procedure with low complication rates when performed by an experienced surgical team.
Typical Recovery Time
Pets return home the same day. Pain is generally well-controlled with medication, and activity restriction is recommended for 10–14 days while the incision heals. Sutures or staples are typically removed in 2 weeks, if present.
