Autumn Care for Dogs

Fall is finally here! This is a great time of year for our canine pals. It’s always nice to take a walk on a crisp autumn afternoon, and take in some foliage with your furry best friend. However, you will want to put a few things on your seasonal to-do list to keep Fido happy, healthy, and safe in autumn. A Columbia, MD vet discusses fall care for dogs in this article.

If your furry buddy has a thin coat, he will probably need a jacket for colder days. Go through your pup’s wardrobe. Make sure all of Fido’s things are in good condition and still fit him well.

Pet-Friendly De-Icing Products

Snow, salt, sand, and ice are all rough on Fido’s sensitive paw pads. Pick up some pet-safe de-icing products, so you have it on hand.

Dreary autumn afternoons are perfect for napping and relaxing. Make sure Fido has a comfy bed. If your pup’s bed has seen better days, you may want to get him a new one. Orthopedic beds are great for older dogs and large breeds. Some pooches will also appreciate a heated bed or heating pad.

If Fido had a summer cut, it’s time to let his hair grow out. This is also a good time to bathe your four-legged friend or take him to the salon.

Some of our canine companions need to eat more when it gets cold. If Fido is highly active, a working dog, a puppy or nursing mama, or just spends a lot of time outdoors, you may want to increase his serving sizes.

Every season presents its own specific hazards, and autumn is no different. It’s important to be aware of these dangers! Lawn chemicals, such as herbicide, pesticide, and fertilizer, are all poisonous to dogs. Antifreeze spills are another issue: antifreeze is highly toxic to pets. Clean or cover spills immediately. Many late-blooming plants are also unsafe. Ask your vet for more information.

Stores will soon be touting pumpkin-flavored everything. Why not enjoy a yummy treat with your dog? Mix pureed pumpkin with natural peanut butter, an egg, and whole-wheat flour. Divide into small portions, and bake at 350 for 40 minutes. Tail wags guaranteed!
