Caring for a Grumpy Cat

Do you have a furry little curmudgeon for a pet? Just like people, cats all have their own unique purrsonalities. Some are friendly and lovable, and others are, well, a bit ornery. Here, an Ellicott City, MD vet offers tips on caring for your cranky feline.

Veterinary Care

First things first. You’ll want to rule out any potential medical issues, and make sure that Fluffy isn’t being crabby because she’s sick or in pain. Schedule a thorough examination for your furry buddy. If your kitty gets the all-clear, then at least you know that health problems aren’t causing her cattitude.

Your may find that Fluffy is quite a bit calmer after a good kitty workout. Take time to play with her regularly. Pouncing on toy mice will give your grouchy pet a healthy outlet for any angst that she is feeling. She’ll also be a bit tired after, which will naturally calm her down.

Kitty Comforts

Make your home fun, comfortable, and relaxing for your cat. Offer Fluffy lots of toys and comfy beds, and set out some pet-safe plants for your cranky kitty to nibble on and hide behind. You may also want to give your kitty some pieces of furniture to investigate, such as cardboard boxes, paper grocery bags, and newspaper tunnels.

Fluffy’s Rules

Always let your kitty decide if and when she wants to be petted. Some cats just don’t like being held! Don’t force attention on your pet: just let her be herself. Fluffy may be purrfectly content to just hang out with you quietly.

Avoid Conflict

Cats often get very defensive if they feel cornered or threatened. Avoid ‘trapping’ your pet in corners, and don’t pick her up if she isn’t in the mood. If you see warning signs of an impending kitty tantrum, such as flattened ears or tail lashing, just walk away and leave Fluffy alone until she calms down.

Offer Hiding Spots

Fluffy may be acting out because she feels unsafe. Offer her a hiding spot in every room. This can be a box, a spot under a bed, or an enclosed kitty condo. If you have a dog that’s bullying your kitty, get her some vertical space, like a cat tower or cat shelves.
